Intensive Four-Day Color Mixing Workshop, November 26-29

November 26 through November 29, 2018 (Mon-Thur, 10am- 5pm)
Price: $450 (includes registration fees)
The workshop will be held in Los Angeles at the private studio of the artist.

Adrian Gottlieb will walk you through the nuances and procedures of color mixing using the same oil colors he uses to paint his figures and portraits. The purpose of the workshop is to provide students the tools necessary for identifying colors in life and accurately representing them in oil paint. This will be a careful, step-by-step process that will be based partly in concept, but almost exclusively in the practical and logistical means of mixing and matching color. While Gottlieb has explained his color mixing methods in his figure and portrait painting workshop over the years, this is the first of his classes to isolate the matter of color mixing to the exclusion of all else, such as composition, form, figure and head construction, anatomy and expression.

During the course of the workshop, areas that will be covered in depth are:

  • Value
  • Hue
  • Chroma
  • Temperature
  • Understanding perceptions in values and “brightness” across different chromas and hues
  • The total possible value ranges under different chromas
  • Shifts in color when lightening and darkening pigments
  • Shifting between color groups in order to mix more accurate colors
  • Transparency and opacity

This workshop will be part lecture, part demonstration, and part student involvement. Students will arrive with their own colors and create paint swatches in order to practice the principles explained and demonstrated by the instructor.

It is the specific intention of this workshop to provide the student with a grasp of color and value as an introduction for the figure and portrait classes he also teaches.
